"The Icon"
Ref. 15500ST.OO.1220ST.01
Gerald Genta sketched it on a napkin in 1972. It broke every rule of luxury watchmaking — and rewrote them all.
The Original Disruptor
In 1972, Gerald Genta sketched a luxury watch in stainless steel with an integrated bracelet and octagonal bezel. The industry thought it was insane — who would pay luxury prices for steel? The Royal Oak answered that question permanently and birthed an entire category. Audemars Piguet remains family-owned after nearly 150 years, fiercely independent in an era of conglomerate-driven horology. The Royal Oak Offshore pushed boundaries further in 1993, and the CODE 11.59 showed AP isn't content to rest on a single icon. Annual production stays around 40,000 pieces, keeping demand perpetually ahead of supply.
Royal Oak designed by Gerald Genta overnight (1972). First luxury steel sports watch. Royal Oak Offshore created the 'big watch' trend (1993).
Royal Oak 15202ST (Jumbo) and early Offshore references have seen triple-digit percentage gains. AP's controlled production and single-icon focus create strong scarcity dynamics.
